The ADEQ booth will feature a visual display and provide information concerning regulated underground storage tanks (UST’s) and aboveground storage tanks (AST’s) in Arkansas. Special emphasis this year will be placed on providing information and outreach concerning newer UST Operator Training and Certification Program. This new requirement established by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 is to ensure that persons operating and maintaining UST systems do so in a manner protective of human health and the environment, and tin compliance with state and federal regulations.

Regulation No. 12 was updated in December 2009 to include provisions for implementing this federal requirement at the state level. By the deadline of August 8, 2012, all UST facilities in Arkansas must have a designated, certified Class A, Class B, and Class C operator. Individuals seeking a Class A or Class B certification must pass a written exam administered by ADEQ with a score of 70% or higher. There is a $25 exam fee for each test taken. (Class C operators do not have to take an exam but must be trained by ADEQ-certified Class A or Class B operators.) In the coming months, ADEQ will provide free UST operator training sessions for anyone wishing to attend prior to taking an exam.

Come by the ADEQ booth at the trade show to find out more about this and other storage tank program updates!
